On December 29 2008, the ‘Telecom For Lebanon-Tapping the Diaspora’ event took place at the Metropolitan palace in Beirut, gathering more than 40 senior executives from the Lebanese Diaspora and over 60 local experts from the telecom sector in the public and private sectors. The event was held under the auspices of H.E. Engineer Gebran Bassil, and was co-organized by Berytech, the Professional Computer Association of Lebanon, the Partnership for Lebanon and the Telecom Regulatory Authority.
The objective of the workshop was to identify the key problems limiting the Telecom sector from growing and new companies from being established in Lebanon. It also tackled the Government laws and regulations to optimize national economic growth, especially in this sector.

Minister Bassil opened the first plenary session by presenting his ‘Lebanon at Horizon 2014’ policy paper to the audience, which was followed by a brief overview of the 5 themes that are going to discussed on the round tables.
The themes presented were the following:
A. Lebanese Diaspora contribution in Telecom development
B. Lebanon, an Information Society, Hub of the MENA region: Media City, Technology zones, ICT areas
C. Reforms: Privatization, Liberalization, Regulation, creation of Liban Telecom
D. Impact on the Economy growth: Telecom spread, Call Centers, e-Applications, Infrastructure and services
E. Broadband Lebanon: The Roadmap, Pilot Projects, Regionally balanced development.
After extensive meetings and discussions, the attendees issued important recommendations that could benefit the sector in Lebanon. The event was followed by a Gala dinner.
